The measure of a man’s real character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Some thirty years ago, I was studying in a public school in New York. One day, Mrs Nanette O’Neill gave an arithmetic 1 to our class. When the papers were 2 she discovered that twelve boys had made exactly the 3 mistakes throughout the test.

There is nothing really new about 4 in exams. Perhaps that was why Mrs O’Neill 5 even say a word about it. She only asked the twelve boys to 6 after class. I was one of the twelve.

Mrs O’Neill asked 7 questions, and she didn’t 8 us either. Instead, she wrote on the blackboard the 9 words by Thomas Macaulay. She then ordered us to 10 these words into our exercise-books one hundred times.

I don’t 11 about the other eleven boys. Speaking for 12 I can say: it was the most important single 13 of my life. Thirty years after being 14 to Macaulay’s words, they 15 seem to me the best yardstick (准绳), because they give us a 16 to measure ourselves rather than others.

17 of us are asked to make 18 decisions about nations going to war or armies going to battle. But all of us are called 19 daily to make a great many personal decisions. 20 the wallet, found in the street, be put into a pocket 21 turned over to the policeman? Should the 22 change received at the store be forgotten or 23 ? Nobody will know except 24 . But you have to live with yourself, and it is always 25 to live with someone you respect.

mark the papers“给试卷评分”。

3.C 考查常识,且exactly the same mistakes与第4题中的cheat相呼应。

6.C remain after class“下课后留在教室(而其他未作弊的都离开)”。

8.A 关键词:Instead

9.D above“上面的,上文提到过的”。

10.D copy“抄写”。

12.A 关键信息:the other eleven boys, speak for myself“就我自己而言”。

13.C lesson“教训”。

introduce sb. to sth.即cause sb. to know sth.,使某人认识/知某事物。

15.B still“仍然,依旧”,与thirty years after。

16.A a way to do sth.“做某事的方法”。

18.C 由nations going to war or armies going to battle可知,这些都是重大决定,故选great。

19.D call on/upon sb. to do sth.

22.A extra change

Valentine’s Day (情人节) is on 14, February each year. It is a day for loves, and one of the loveliest holidays in the United States.

Very few Americans know the story of Valentine’s Day. One English story tells that birds select their mates on February 14. Another story says that more than 2, 000 years ago the ancient Romans celebrated a holiday for lovers. As part of the celebration, girls wrote their names on pieces of paper and put them in a large container. Boys reached their hands into the container and pulled one out. The girl whose name was written on the paper became his lover or sweet heart for a year. Then came a Roman priest Valentinus, who secretly married many young lovers against the Roman king’s order. The Roman Emperor got angry and ordered the killing of Valentinus on February 14, 269 AD.

It is very popular to send cards decorated with hearts and flowers to express love. Today many Americans like to exchange humorous cards with their husbands, wives, mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, relatives, and even special friends. Some enjoy the joke of sending“Guess Who”cards to a person he or she secretly admires. Sometimes they put their love message in a heart-shaped box of chocolates, or a bunch of flowers tied with red ribbons (丝带). Candy, perfume, jewelry or a picture with a heart and Cupid (the Roman God of love), who is armed with a bow and arrow, are also sent to express love. Many couples arrange romantic dinners by candle light for this occasion. Universities also hold a Sweetheart Ball for the young students to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

B.Because he was poor and the Emperor didn’t want to marry his daughter to him.

C.Because he told people how to celebrate Valentine’s Day, which made the Emperor angry.

D.Because he did not follow the Emperor’s order and secretly married many young lovers.

2.What do the university students nowadays do on Valentine’s Day?

A.They celebrate Valentine’s Day in the same way just as the ancient Romans did over 2, 000 years ago.

B.They just send cards decorated with hearts and flowers to the persons they love.

C.They take part in a Sweetheart Ball which universities hold for them.

D.They arrange romantic dinners by candle light for this occasion.

3.The passage is mainly about _____.

A.the story of Valentine’s Day

B.how students celebrate Valentine’s Day in universities

C.how Valentine’s Day was celebrated more than 2, 000 years ago

D.the origin (起源) of Valentine’s Day and the modern ways of celebrating it

4.“Guess Who”card is ______.

A.an unsigned card

B.given to friends and family members

C.sent to a person together with flowers, candy, perfume or a picture
